The Belgian expertise centre for information security, LSEC, invites all Belgian start-up companies and SMEs to compete in the Global Security Challenge 2009, the biggest international competition in the field of security innovation.
LSEC has also launched a call to submit projects for the LSEC Information Security Awards 2009. The organization wants to reward leading-edge projects and technologies in the field of information security.
Global Security Challenge
LSEC is the European partner of the Global Security Challenge (GSC). This competition offers researchers, entrepreneurs and start-up companies the opportunity to showcase their security inventions and compete for some great prizes. All European participants are invited to an event in Brussels on 09.09.09 where other participants, but also investors and interested companies, are given the chance to question them. The closing date to submit proposals for this competition is 15 June 2009.
By showcasing innovative ideas and developments to other Belgian companies, LSEC also wants to launch a broader social debate about current information security challenges. Companies competing in the GSC are not only handed a national, but also an international platform to showcase their innovation to the world. And they are also introduced to international investors who are specialized in the subject and are able to support them. And finally, more than 500,000 dollar in grants and subsidies can be won.
Belgian participants in the GSC are assisted by experts of local partner LSEC, as well as the universities of Leuven and Louvain-La-Neuve. The final will be held in November at the London Business School.
LSEC Information Security Awards
The LSEC Information Security Awards 2009 will also be held on 9 September. The aim is to encourage the local development of innovative and creative solutions to protect valuable information or computer systems.
Varied projects come into consideration for these awards, including solutions for data or network protection, correct user identification, unwanted visitor reports, SPAM or malicious software solutions, identity theft prevention, virtualized computer system protection, etc. The only requirement is that the developer or company where the innovation was created is active in Belgium.
There are awards for solutions which have had a big social impact or are very innovative, as well as awards for specific results or international recognition.
The organizers target companies which have made major investments in improving identity management, companies who have gone to great lengths to raise people’s awareness, who played a key role in a world-wide organization in the creation of security processes, etc.
“Security risks are not bound to an economic crisis,” says Ulrich Seldeslachts, CEO of LSEC. “Quite the contrary in fact. This is when new risks emerge, but also new possibilities to tackle them. We’re increasingly confronted with these risks, which makes it very important to look for new ways to uphold the security of our information. This is how we want to encourage this search.”
The deadline for submitting projects for the LSEC Information Security Awards 2009 is 30 June 2009. More information, and registration forms and subscription to the 9 event are available on the event page.
