LSEC meets with Bruce Scheier in Amsterdam. Bruce talks about the 10 trends in Information Security.
22-Jan-2008
Prior to joining the Information Security world, Bruce Schneier was already a name and a personality. Famous for his founding father activities in the Information Security Industry within Counterpane, his books and the famous blog “Schneier on Security” at http://www.schneier.com/blog; the man has turned into a legend. The approximately 1,75m pony tail Bruce has definitely something to say about Security. And we should be listening carefully. Some may say that his contributions haven’t changed over the last couple of years. That may be the case, but that doesn’t mean that they are not relevant, nor that they are not correct.
Bruce is a eloquent speaker, and a strange person. He has a charming way to challenge his crowd, but he is a rare individual that brings a market wide view on things that do matter. Both bottom up talking about intrusions, botnets, and other things that we in the industry talk about. He also has a top down approach, understanding the business logic and the relativity of Security. Security by fear doesn’t work. Security by opportunity neither. Security seems to work through being obliged to follow a certain set of rules. Being it law, or industry practice, at least something that a company has to live up to in order to do business.
Bruce will be visiting Belgium later this year, but on this event organized by BT and BT Counterpane in Amsterdam on January 21st, 2008,
We will spare those details until that time and start to prepare Bruce for a challenge on the Security market by developing a list of questions. You can contribute by adding to those questions on the LSEC Forum.
In any case, these are some of the suggestions on the economics of the Information Security and 10 trends in securty worth watching :
1. Information is more valuable than ever
2; Networks are critical infrastructure
3. Users do not necessarily control information about themselves
4.. Hacking is increasingly a criminal profession
5. Complexity is your enemy
6. Attacks are faster than patches
7. Worms are more sophisticated than ever
8. The endpoint is the weakest link
9. End users are seen as threats
10. Regulations are driving security business
