LSEC has been developing a series of flyers for SME's, and professionals that need to explain basic security threats

Recently, LSEC published results of a survey undertaken late 2008 in collaboration with our partner KMO-IT, where we asked 152 Flemish SME’s about their attitude towards information management and specifically their activities on protecting and risk mitigation of this information. Some of these companies, we have had more in depth discussions with. Results indicated that, even with a vast majority of SME’s still being micro-enterprises with 1 to 3 people involved, the vast amount of “important” information that they are having, as indicated by them; is quite sensitive. Financial information (banking, accounting, sales, purchasing, ....), customer data (addresses, contact lists, sales, ...), confidential information and other important information has been indicated by most of the respondents, of the type of information that they are actively allowing access to. This information usually is somehow restraint to some people in the company, but the measures of such a company to protect itself against risks of losing it or protecting it from information theft are quite restricted.
SME’s have installed in most cases, as indicated by themselves, a firewall and an anti-virus program; but that’ sall there is to it.
By issuing flyers with basic concepts of information security threats and internet-related threats, LSEC wants to warn these SME’s in about potential threats.
They are intended to the end users within a company, but also to the owner and director of the company and to the resellers of ICT-materials who can hand them out to their customers and partners.
LSEC has created these flyers in collaboration with its British partner the KTN Cybersecurity, the Business Crime Reduction Centre and People United Against Crime. All of us are not-for-profit organizations partially
or fully funded by government institutions, with the aim to reducing the level of crime and raising the level of awareness.
Additional actions from LSEC will be setting up a network of SME’s that can be helped in their battle to avoid information theft. If you are an SME and interested in participation in such a program, please contact us at sme @ lsec.be.
