Companies should care about information security, because it enables their business and improves efficiency.

Dr. Carmichael’s presentation and viewpoints on LSEC’s Special Mid Year event and Annual Meeting last Monday was enlightning to many. To most of the people in the industry, the message was clear that even being a CSO for a company such as McAfee, business drivers are more important than technology to convince your management on making investments in improved security. Dr. Carmichael’s view is that there is no ROI-case for Security and that most of it is driven by Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD); without any significant view on returning part of the investment made. Fundamentally however, we believe that any company should evaluate at least how they want to deal with Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability (CIA). If you are convinced that all information that is going around in your company is not at all that important and “for your eyes only”, than such a factor wil fall out. If you are maintaining a business with customers coming in 24/7, you should care for Availability and protect systems from downtime from all reasons, inlcuding and especialy those impacting your and your customers’ security. Even more, key value drivers for security include Differentiation, increasing existing Value Proposition, additional services or product offerings, reduction of loss, greater margins and retaining profitability.
The science of econometrics and powerful analytical tools that look into your organizations’ internals could be a good way to start.
