Security Forum 2007, almost a success !
29-Oct-2007
Last week, the LSEC Security Forum 2007 was almost another success. Filled with a diversity of interesting presentations (ranging from mobile phone security to IPv6 threats), a number of national and international qualitative speakers (David Naccache, Adi Shamir, Graeme Proudler, ...) and a great environment to be in (the SAP lounge in Brussels). Almost a success, the almost mainly because the lack of presence of a widely available public.
David Naccache opened the Security Forum with an excellent presentation on why every once in a while you should consider your best business friend, your cell phone as an enemy nr 1. For our security experts, the unhackable will be hacked, that is a drive in life. That also was the case for the simpelest of handsets. Yes ofcourse, bluetooth, that’s a well known in a smartphone. But what about using simple SMS ?? Other security threats on the hardware layer of a pc, were balanced with the proposal from the Trusted Computing Architecture. Almost 30 years after their paper on RSA, Adi Shamir presented SQUASH and how that could be implemented on both passive RFID and supercomputing architectures.
Disturbing was the doubts that Mr. Shamir presented on the future of IT. Technologies and systems are developing at such a pace, and hackers
are living up to the speed of those developments, that it is very hard for the IT Security Industry to weapon itself against those threats. By the industry those
threats are still regarded as opportunities.
The disturbing matter about the Security Forum however was the low attendance. We ofcourse know that there finally were a couple of events running at the same time (like the Telindus Symposium in Tour & Taxis), also a well attended event on a yearly basis. We would also accept that with topics such as cryptography and side channel attacks, we do not really attract the majority of the IT industry. But, as LSEC we should continuously strive to reach a broader audience, whilst at events such as Security Forum still keeping a very high level of visionary.
The path towards Security Forum 2008 has already started, beyond a multi-channel evaluation.
